Welcome to A Buddhist View

A Buddhist view is designed to be a resource for reading suttas and understanding the teachings of the Buddha as found in the early Buddhist texts.

This post will give you an overview of the site's functionality and what you can expect to find here.

Suttas

Currently, the suttas section contains all available translations from Thanissaro Bhikkhu, Bhikkhu Bodhi, Bhante Anigha and Sister Medhini. We also have plans to continually add translations from other authors.

You can view all suttas for a given translator by going to /suttas/translators. On each individual sutta, if there is another translation available, you'll see the tranlators name in the dropdown on the left.

Adjusting Reading Styles

In the spirit of creating a good experience for reading the suttas, we've added a typography adjuster component to every sutta page that allows you to change the line-height, content width, font-size and theme. There's even a 'bionic reading' toggle for those who find it helpful. If you save these settings, they will persist to local storage on your device so they're aren't lost when you navigate away.

Jump back to position after reading footnote

In order to make it easy to check a footnote, and not lose you place, when you click a footnote link, you'll be taken to the note at the bottom of the page, and a 'back to text' button will appear to take you back to your reading position when you're done. The button is found in the bottom right of the page, next to the 'scroll to top (up) arrow'.

Retreat Finder

The reatreat finder is for the purpose of find retreats where one can be in at least relative seclusion for practice if one wishes. The existing list of places are places that we've come across online or visited in the past. However, we don't have any affiliation with any place on the list. If there's a place that you can vouch for that you think would be good to add, please feel free to contact us at contact@abuddhistview.com with the address, website and contact details.

Simple Search

You can search the site by hitting the search icon in the nav bar, or by hitting ctrl/cmd + k on your keyboard. Currently, the search is limited to post content but will soon be expanded to include suttas.

RSS Feed

You can find an RSS feed for the site at /feed.xml.

Installation

The site is currently installable as a basic progressive web app. You can 'install' it by adding to your homescreen on your mobile device. Offline support will be added shortly.
