Dutiyapatipadasutta: The Way (2nd) - translated by Bhikkhu Anīgha

Sāvatthinidānaṁ. At Sāvatthī.

“Gihino vāhaṁ, bhikkhave, pabbajitassa vā micchāpaṭipadaṁ na vaṇṇemi. “Bhikkhus, whether for a layperson or one gone forth, I do not praise the wrong way. Gihi vā, bhikkhave, pabbajito vā micchāpaṭipanno micchāpaṭipattādhikaraṇahetu nārādhako hoti ñāyaṁ dhammaṁ kusalaṁ. Whether it is a layperson or one gone forth who is practising wrongly, because of undertaking the wrong way of practice he does not attain the method, the Dhamma that is wholesome.

Katamā ca, bhikkhave, micchāpaṭipadā? And what, bhikkhus, is the wrong way? Seyyathidaṁ—micchādiṭṭhi …pe… micchāsamādhi. It is: wrong view, wrong intention, wrong speech, wrong action, wrong livelihood, wrong effort, wrong recollectedness, wrong composure. Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, micchāpaṭipadā. This is called the wrong way. Gihino vāhaṁ, bhikkhave, pabbajitassa vā micchāpaṭipadaṁ na vaṇṇemi. Bhikkhus, whether for a layperson or one gone forth, I do not praise the wrong way. Gihi vā, bhikkhave, pabbajito vā micchāpaṭipanno micchāpaṭipattādhikaraṇahetu nārādhako hoti ñāyaṁ dhammaṁ kusalaṁ. Whether it is a layperson or one gone forth who is practising wrongly, because of undertaking the wrong way of practice he does not attain the method, the Dhamma that is wholesome.”
