Kappamāṇavapucchā

Kappamāṇavapucchā: Questions of the Pupil Kappa - translated by Sāmaṇera Subodhivihāri and Sāmaṇera Khemavihāri

“For those remaining amidst the stream,”
said the venerable Kappa,
“the flood, born, greatly fearsome;
for those overcome by aging and death,
declare an island good sir.
Tell me of an island,
so that there might be no more of this.”

“For those remaining amidst the stream, Kappa,”
said the Auspicious One,
“the flood, born, greatly fearsome;
for those overcome by aging and death,
I declare you an island, Kappa.
Having nothing, not taking —
this is the island with nothing more.
I call it ‘Extinguishment’ —
the total wasting away of aging and death.
Those recollected ones, understanding this,
fully extinguished in this very life —
they do not follow Māra’s will,
they are not his footmen.”
