“Ye me pubbe viyākaṁsu, ‘All they explained to me before,’ (iccāyasmā hemako) said Venerable Hemaka, Huraṁ gotamasāsanā; ‘Outside of the teaching of Gotama was Iccāsi iti bhavissati, “So it was; so it will become.“ Sabbaṁ taṁ itihītihaṁ; All that was pure so-saying; Sabbaṁ taṁ takkavaḍḍhanaṁ, All that was the growth of abstract reasoning, Nāhaṁ tattha abhiramiṁ. In which I did not delight.
Tvañca me dhammamakkhāhi, Rather, sage, tell me the Dhamma, taṇhānigghātanaṁ muni; The destruction of craving, Yaṁ viditvā sato caraṁ, Which, having understood it, living recollected, tare loke visattikaṁ”. One would cross the entanglement in the world.
“Idha diṭṭhasutamutaviññātesu, Here, Hemaka, with regard to things seen, heard, thought, or cognized Piyarūpesu hemaka; That are held dear— Chandarāgavinodanaṁ, The dispelling of passion and desire there*The dispelling of passion and desire is *with regard to* what is held dear. This implies that:
1) Any practice that seeks to get rid of or remove the perception of things that are dear, or to deny their reality, would make it impossible to realize dispassion on the right level. 2) Any acting out of passion and desire towards things that are dear, equally makes it impossible to realize dispassion on the right level.
The discernment of the middle way depends on [allowing the experience of that which is the *basis* for passion and desire to manifest, while at the same time restraining any and all passionate actions by body, speech, or mind with regard to that manifestation](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ttVxzlzlj0). This is how one [“neither pushes forward, nor stands still”](https://suttas.hillsidehermitage.org/?q=sn1.1). Nibbānapadamaccutaṁ. Is Nibbāna, the unfalling state.Etadaññāya ye satā, Those who have understood this, recollected, Diṭṭhadhammābhinibbutā; Are fully extinguished there and then. Upasantā ca te sadā, And always, they are at rest, Tiṇṇā loke visattikan”ti. Beyond entanglement in the world.
Hemakamāṇavapucchā aṭṭhamā.
