“Cha, bhikkhave, dhamme appahāya abhabbo paṭhamaṁ jhānaṁ upasampajja viharituṁ. “Bhikkhus, having not given up these six things, it’s impossible to abide having entered upon the first jhāna. Katame cha? What six? Kāmacchandaṁ, byāpādaṁ, thinamiddhaṁ, uddhaccakukkuccaṁ, vicikicchaṁ. Sensual desire, ill will, indolence-and-lethargy, restlessness-and-anxiety, and doubt. Kāmesu kho panassa ādīnavo na yathābhūtaṁ sammappaññāya sudiṭṭho hoti. If a person continues to perform sensual actions—even worse, with a [view that sensuality is fine](https://suttas.hillsidehermitage.org/?q=mn22) “in moderation” as long as they're a layperson—they have evidently not seen the danger in sensuality well enough. It's therefore impossible that someone who isn't committed to celibacy and sense restraint would attain [jhānas](https://www.hillsidehermitage.org/what-the-jhanas-actually-are/). In [MN 14](https://suttas.hillsidehermitage.org/?q=mn14), the Buddha states that it is precisely due to one’s mind still being gripped by unwholesome states, the antithesis of jhāna, that they would choose to continue living at home enjoying sense pleasures.
