“Pañcahi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu abhabbo sammāsamādhiṁ upasampajja viharituṁ. “Bhikkhus, endowed with five qualities, a bhikkhu cannot abide having entered upon right composure. Katamehi pañcahi? What five? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu akkhamo hoti rūpānaṁ, akkhamo saddānaṁ, akkhamo gandhānaṁ, akkhamo rasānaṁ, akkhamo phoṭṭhabbānaṁ. It’s when a bhikkhu can’t endure sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and touches. *Meaning, he cannot prevent his mind from experiencing lust or aversion even when challenged by sense objects that would provoke it. This is why being proficient in [sense restraint](https://www.hillsidehermitage.org/restraining-the-senses/) is a prerequisite for the practice of meditation (SN 46.4), which would otherwise revolve around finding ways to suppress the sense objects that the mind is too feeble to put up with without losing its center, giving rise to a wrong kind of peace. Imehi kho, bhikkhave, pañcahi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu abhabbo sammāsamādhiṁ upasampajja viharituṁ. Endowed with these five qualities, a bhikkhu cannot abide having entered upon right composure.
